I've had the privelege of contributing to this community in many volunteer roles — on the Library Board, the Community Centre, the school District PAC, the Community Engagement Committee, and with Ambleside parkrun.
Since 2024 I've worked for MLA Jeremy Valeriote resolving problems for constituents and advocating to the provincial government for essential amenities and services.
I believe we owe it to our kids, and grandchildren, to leave them a better West Van and the best possible future.
That means tackling challenges like housing, transportation, and economic sustainability; protecting our natural environment; and prioritizing health and wellbeing, so that they too can enjoy a liveable, vibrant West Van.
And how do we achieve this?
Call me old-fashioned, but if we start with the facts and work in good faith I believe we can find agreement and achieve better results.
West Van's natural landscape, between the mountains and the sea, makes it beautiful, but also vulnerable - to landslides, flooding, wildfire, and drought. Our natural assets - watershed, urban canopy, and shoreline - provide important ecological and human benefits, if we protect them.
When we support public parks, recreation, and amenities including local businesses, we enhance the quality of life - and health - for residents of all ages.
Maintaining and renewing the infrastructure and services our communities depend on is increasingly expensive. Since 97% of those costs come from property taxes we need to do more to diversify our sources of income. Fiscal responsibility means having honest conversations about what would be cut, over and above efficiency savings.
Ensuring that family and friends are appropriately housed - seniors, young families, and our essential service workers - is essential for community cohesion and wellbeing.
Providing safer streets and alternative ways to get around - especially for kids, seniors, and commuters - means fewer car journeys, and less congestion for everyone.
Effective engagement means consulting widely; listening as well as informing; and providing opportunities to steer decision-making.
